Support For Special Needs Pupils Now “Beyond Crisis”
A new report has found that 97 per cent of schools say they receive insufficient funding in order to provide support to those pupils with special needs, describing the situation in England as “beyond crisis”.
The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) study found that almost a third of schools have had to cut services in the last 12 months, the BBC reports, with a call now issued for funding increases to be implemented in order to ensure that all students can be supported in their education.
Paul Whiteman, NAHT general secretary, explained that school budgets are now under extreme pressure, despite government rhetoric regarding extra investment.
He said: “A far more ambitious programme of investment is required from the government if schools are going to be able to deliver the education that the current generation of pupils need and deserve.”
The government has said that its review of the system aims to drive improvements in this regard, with funding for higher-level needs in 2022-23 rising 9.6 per cent. The Department for Education will also provide £42 million for projects for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
